The day when everyone on social media tries to shoehorn a love theme into their posts.

Today I’m thinking about my greatest loves.

My first love: learning and books

And my current greatest love: Calpol. Which is seeing me through some rocky illness-ridden times with our three little ones

(OK – hubby and three little ones are really my greatest loves. Especially as I’m currently listening to said hubby use a plunger to get hair out of the shower drain, a job which makes me shudder with horror.)

This past week my greatest loves were all swirling around together as I book-ended two hospital trips with one of the twinions with a fantastic training course in Cardiff.

The training was in Motivational Interviewing.

And one of the main themes was how you deal with discord.

Do you meet it head on like a raging bull (my nickname for one of said twins)…

Or do you avoid it like the plague (the other twin’s current obsession along with the Great Fire of London)?

What if there was a third way?

For me, that’s what Motivational Interviewing offers.

A way of having helpful discussions with people which:

– is directional but not directive
– respects people’s autonomy but ultimately can end up being more persuasive than the raging bull approach
– evokes change and growth in others

Those of you who’ve attended training through The Carvalho Consultancy may know that our sessions are infused with MI principles.

So I was really chuffed to complete this Advanced training.

Training alongside psychologists, psychiatrists, GPs, dieticians, sports coaches, even an adviser to poultry vets and farmers was fascinating. And shows how universally applicable these principles are.

Thanks to Orla Adams and Steve Rollnick for a fantastic training.

It’s often really difficult being a working parent.

But, at its best, I find the work and the constant learning energises me for my life with the little ones.

And time with the little ones teaches me principles I can then use in my work!

Get in touch if you and your team would like to explore training on MI and working with discord.

And I’ll be delivering a seminar on Motivational Interviewing and Mediation with the FAMILY MEDIATORS ASSOCIATION next month so contact them if you’d be interested in signing up.

PS Oh and this year’s card to hubby demonstrates my final greatest love – The US Office
