Q  What on earth have therapeutic skills got to do with being a family law barrister?

A  Let me show you!!!

One of my absolute highlights of 2023 was providing a day’s training for a group of barristers on the North Eastern Circuit on ‘therapeutic skills for family barristers’.

And it went so well, we get to do it all over again! 🎉

It will be held in Manchester in November but barristers from all regions are welcome – full details below.

With huge thanks to the Family Law Bar Association and Northern Circuit for partly subsidising this event.

*Therapeutic skills for barristers seminar* – 16 November 2024

When: Saturday 16 November 2024, 10 am to 4 pm (one hour lunch break; refreshments will be provided)

Where: Deans Court Chambers, Manchester, M3 4DF (in person – no remote access available)

Price: The seminar is partly subsidised by the FLBA and Northern Circuit. The cost for FLBA members will be £30; non-FLBA members £35; pupils £15.

The seminar will be conducted by Annmarie Carvalho, director of TCC (www.carvalhotherapy.com). Annmarie trained as a therapist after working as a family lawyer and mediator for over a decade. She now runs TCC, a multi award-winning agency of former lawyers turned therapists and coaches providing training, coaching, therapy and family law supervision services to barristers and solicitors.

Provisional programme:

The following modules will be covered during the seminar:
The psychology of family law – recognising the interrelationship between the clients’ issues and your own triggers.
How to incorporate core therapeutic principles into your practice (and your communication), including empathy, congruence, positive regard and active listening.
How to work with traumatised clients (and recognise and address your own vicarious trauma).
Working with hostility and resistance.

Testimonials from 2023 session

“It was obvious that counselling skills should be part of the ‘toolkit’ of every barrister engaged in emotionally charged litigation. Indeed, I would recommend it to all of my professional colleagues, especially those dealing with emotionally vulnerable individuals caught up in the criminal justice system.”

“I found the session very engaging and highly relevant to our practice, particularly private law.”

“Really lovely presentation by Annmarie, professional but light-hearted and entertaining. Thought-provoking rather than prescriptive.”

“The course has made me evaluate/reflect on my own practice and how I can improve the experience for both my client and I.”
