Navigating What Lies Beneath

Our Trauma informed Therapist Katie McKenna recently moved back to Scotland and currently boasts an enviable view of the Firth of Clyde. During our recent TCC team meeting, she spotted something striking: a submarine gliding just beneath the surface of the water. Luckily, she snapped a picture of it as it passed by her window.

It made us reflect on how powerful the submarine can be as a metaphor for our inner worlds.

Much like the ocean, our minds hold layers that aren’t always visible. What others may see on the surface; confidence, professionalism, composure can mask what lies beneath: stress, anxiety, self-doubt, or unresolved experiences. And just like a submarine appearing unexpectedly, these hidden pressures can surface in ways that can take us by surprise.

For legal professionals, whose roles demand calm authority and precision, this can feel especially challenging. The expectations are high, the waters often turbulent, and yet the hidden weight is very real.

That’s where therapy can act like the pilot ship; helping you to chart a safe course, safely illuminate what’s hidden, and give you the tools to navigate the unexpected with greater clarity and resilience.

With her move back to Scotland, Katie is continuing to offer therapy and reflective practice sessions tailored for the legal profession through TCC. Her thoughtful and empathetic approach supports professionals with navigating what lies beneath and finding healthier ways to manage the pressures of demanding careers. Picture description: A dark submarine hull glides low across the water, moving steadily from one side of the frame toward the other. Just ahead of it, a smaller pilot boat passes by. Its silhouette crisp and upright against the sea. The water is calm but textured, and beyond the vessels, you can faintly make out a distant coastline and rolling hills, all under a sky filled with large, softly glowing clouds. The scene is quietly dramatic. A moment where the hidden strength of the submarine meets the approachable presence of the pilot boat.
