Coming Autumn 2025: Staying Sane in Family Law

A Survival Guide for Lawyers Working in the Most Emotionally Charged Practice Area

Our founder, Annmarie’s debut book, Staying Sane in Family Law, is set for release on 30 September 2025 published by Bath Publishing. It’s a deeply practical and refreshingly honest guide for anyone in the family law world on how to navigate the emotional intensity of practice (with a big dollop of humour!). Family law asks a lot of lawyers - compassion, clarity, resilience, emotional control, and mental stamina. Burnout, vicarious trauma and overwhelm are often part of the job. This book helps you stay steady, human, and effective in the middle of it all. Inside, she shares:

  • Tools to protect your mental health
  • Strategies for building emotional resilience
  • Ways to keep boundaries with difficult or distressed clients
  • Real-world stories from the frontline (Annmarie's included)

Whether you’re just starting out or have decades of experience, this book will help you not just survive, but thrive in family law. Click here to come to a seminar (and get a free book!) - Attend the seminar

“I asked Annmarie to look at providing support for our growing team due to her background in family law in the hope that she would understand the particular pressures of mainly young staff working in this complex and challenging area. This was indeed the case; Annmarie immediately “got it” and got to the heart of the issues with common sense with helpful resolutions offered. Really recommend and will work with Annmarie as needed in future.”

“Annmarie began facilitating our in-house counselling sessions for lawyers just over a year ago. The feedback has been fantastic and due to demand, we very quickly doubled the number of appointments available per month, which are always fully booked.…. Annmarie can relate to many of the challenges faced by our lawyers due to her background as a city lawyer. This has proved highly beneficial and has contributed greatly towards the success of the service and the relationships she has forged.”

“We were thrilled to be able to host Annmarie Carvalho’s “What’s Psychology got to do with it” training for family lawyers in our offices recently. We had over 30 delegates, mostly practising family lawyers across Scotland, and the feedback has been tremendous – we all got a great deal from the training and Annmarie herself was so engaging, warm and credible that the day passed in a flash. As one delegate said “I need Annmarie in my life!” She manages to cover really difficult subjects with compassion and humour – it made our roles seem more doable, and all the more important – I have already put some of the learning to practical use and know that I am not alone in that. We hope and intend to repeat and develop this fundamental skills training going forward – thank you Annmarie!”

“We have worked very closely with TCC for many years and we have always been very impressed by the services they provide. It is so useful for us to be able to access a comprehensive suite of services which are confidential and independent and delivered with a very high level of professionalism – we simply could not replicate this inhouse”

We’re here to help
What is therapeutic supervision/reflective practice? How is it different from therapy?

Our clients have psychologically demanding and high pressure jobs. Therapeutic supervision provides a supportive space to discuss the issues and situations that arise and the knock-on effect on you. All of our supervisors are qualified therapists and can talk things through with you on a deeper level, helping you to identify patterns and dynamics that you’d like to change. While not limited to talking about work, there is slightly more of a focus on professional life than in ‘regular’ therapy. At TCC we offer both individual and group therapeutic supervision.

What is the difference between therapy and coaching?

Coaching tends to be present and future focused whereas, in therapy, we delve into the background and history to identify the roots of behaviours and dynamics that may be bothering you today. At TCC we find some of our clients like an approach that combines both therapeutic and coaching techniques. A number of us work in that way and we can adapt to fit what is best for you!

Are sessions in person or online?

Our clients are busy people (and so are we!) and live across the UK and beyond. So we tend to find that online sessions work best for the vast majority of our clients. Having said that, we do see some of our clients in person at their firms in London.

Do you only work with lawyers?

No! While TCC’s roots are in the legal profession, you don’t have to be a lawyer to have therapy, coaching or training with us. We support business support professionals and those going through legal processes too. We also work with professionals from the financial services industry and other high-octane worlds.

How much do you charge?

Our fees depend on whether the service you require is coaching/therapy and whether we are working with a firm/organisation or an individual. We also offer preferential rates for charities. The best thing to do is to make an enquiry and talk to our support team and we can set it all out clearly!

Do you work with clients outside of the UK?

Yes, we are increasingly working with clients worldwide. Get in touch to find out more.

Will my insurance cover me?

As a specialist agency providing bespoke support, we do not currently work with insurance providers.
