A Survival Guide for Lawyers Working in the Most Emotionally Charged Practice Area
Our founder, Annmarie’s debut book, Staying Sane in Family Law, is set for release on 30 September 2025 published by Bath Publishing. It’s a deeply practical and refreshingly honest guide for anyone in the family law world on how to navigate the emotional intensity of practice (with a big dollop of humour!). Family law asks a lot of lawyers - compassion, clarity, resilience, emotional control, and mental stamina. Burnout, vicarious trauma and overwhelm are often part of the job. This book helps you stay steady, human, and effective in the middle of it all. Inside, she shares:

Having had a varied legal career – I trained at Norton Rose (including 6 winter months in their Moscow office as a trainee), I was a corporate lawyer at Baker & McKenzie, and then a commercial lawyer at Royal Mail – I undertook a Diploma in Psychotherapy, as I am fascinated by psychology and human beings. I am now a registered member of the BACP and I run the diploma course I originally trained on!
I worked long hours as a lawyer and I experienced the highs and lows of both a city practice and being in-house. I know how rewarding it can be – and how punishing it can feel, at times. I am a trainer for Mind, and I realise how valuable it would have been to have had some understanding of mental health and mental wellbeing whilst working under those pressures. It feels good to be able to share this understanding with others who are in that position now.
I have a warm and attentive approach. I love a challenge and I work in a way which aims to empower others. Through my different roles, I have the pleasure of working with people of all ages, cultures and professions, and this has enabled me to be receptive to whatever emerges.
I truly believe that every human being has value and worth, and I work hard with my clients to enable them to discover this for themselves. We are all born with the ability to achieve our full potential, but sometimes life can get in the way. It is a privilege to work with people to help them to shift those internal blocks and obstacles.
I have a creative style, as I believe that no one size fits all; I love using new approaches and techniques. It is all about the connection… ultimately, that is the essence of every good relationship. I will bring all of myself to the work, and I hope to meet you there!
