Katie McKenna
Katie is a trauma-informed and integrative psychotherapist, a registered BACP member, a Lawcare volunteer and budding aerialist.
With a successful legal career behind me, I retrained as a trauma-informed psychotherapist with a passion for improving mental health in the legal profession. Holding a Master’s degree with distinction in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, I am a proud member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists.
During my legal career, I witnessed firsthand the immense pressures solicitors face, from regulatory compliance to emotionally heavy workloads. I supported high street practices and sole practitioners across Scotland, developing a deep understanding of the mental health challenges unique to the legal profession. I have always been actively supportive of trainees and newly qualified solicitors, particularly during my time with the Trainee and Newly Qualified Society, the Law Society of Scotland, and in various mentoring and peer support roles. My work as a volunteer for LawCare and the creation of Lawscot Wellbeing reflect my ongoing commitment to mental health advocacy. I also dedicated my master’s research to examining attitudes towards counselling within the solicitor profession in Great Britain.
My therapeutic approach is person-centred, with an emphasis on empathy and respect for each individual’s journey. I draw on a range of modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Transactional Analysis, and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), to tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs.
My specialised training allows me to provide trauma-informed care, having worked extensively with survivors of rape and childhood sexual abuse. I have a keen interest in helping solicitors, particularly those working in criminal, family, and personal injury law, manage the effects of vicarious trauma and the emotional toll that comes with their workload.
Counselling provides a confidential, non-judgemental space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and relationships. I believe that you are the expert in your own life, and my role is to be your companion on the journey toward greater self-awareness, resilience, and wellbeing. To ensure a strong therapeutic relationship, I offer an initial consultation to confirm we’re the right fit before starting the counselling process together.
Outside of my practice, I enjoy aerial hoop and silks, hiking, paddleboarding, and getting lost in a good book.
